Atlanta Public Schools requires the best-qualified teaching and non-teaching substitutes to serve our students. Continuity in the learning process is supported via the placement of substitute employees during absences of the regular employee.

ELIGIBILITY DETAILS:

  • Substitute applicants must pass the Atlanta Public Schools Fingerprint/Background Check.
  • Eligibility for renewal each year is met by completing the minimum work requirement established by Substitute Services and by adhering to Board policy and procedures.
  • Substitutes work on an on-call, as-needed basis, with reasonable assurance to work during the current school year.
  • Substitute work is not guaranteed for any APS holiday or vacation period.

Substitute Category Requirement Details

Certified Substitute Teacher
  • $180 per day/$24 per hour
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree
  • Valid, professional Georgia teaching certificate
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to comprehend and follow directives
Non-Certified Substitute Teacher
  • $135.00 per day/$18 per hour
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree or above from a regionally accredited college or university or a PSC approved institution. Verifiable by transcript or diploma.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to comprehend and follow directives
  • Training requirement
    • Satisfy one of the following:
      • Online Substitute Training Course ($39.95 fee) with a composite passing score of at least 80% OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, professional teaching certificate issued by a state credentialing agency OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, paraprofessional teaching certificate issued by a state credentialing agency OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, professional service certificate issued by a state credentialing agency OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, professional leadership certificate issued by a state credentialing agency
Substitute Paraprofessional
  • $112.50 per day/$15 per hour 
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Training requirement
    • Satisfy one of the following:
      • Online Substitute Training Course ($39.95 fee) with a composite passing score of at least 80% OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, professional teaching certificate issued by a state credentialing agency OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, paraprofessional teaching certificate issued by a state credentialing agency OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, professional service certificate issued by a state credentialing agency OR
      • Provide proof of a valid or expired, professional leadership certificate issued by a state credentialing agency
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to comprehend and follow directives

The below categories are for extended leave replacement and vacant positions only. Requires PRIOR HR authorization.

Substitute Assistant Principal

Rate of pay per day: $261

Minimum Education Requirement: 

VALID GA Leadership Certification

Selection is subject to approval by the Executive Director of Talent Management

Substitute Principal

Rate of pay per day: $360.98

Minimum Education Requirement: 

VALID GA Leadership Certification

Selection is subject to approval by the Executive Director of Talent Management

Long Term Requirements:

An assignment is considered “Long Term” when a substitute works in the same assignment for 20 consecutive days.

To be paid the “Long Term Pay Rate” ($210 per day/$28 per hour), ALL of the following criteria must be met:

  • The substitute must work 20 consecutive days in the same assignment.
  • The substitute must posses a valid, Georgia Teaching certificate.
  • The substitute’s certification must match the certification required for the assignment.

* Only teaching assignments are eligible for the long term pay rate.*

Complete Online Substitute Training

  • The Online Substitute Training Course is $39.95 per person and can be purchased online with a Visa or Mastercard. The course is designed by Utah State University Substitute Teaching Institute and delivered by STEDI.org.
  • Completion of the Online Substitute Training Course with a composite passing score of at least 80% is required to receive a SubDiploma.
  • Upload the SubDiploma to your Atlanta Public School’s application as proof of the substitute training requirement.
  • A valid/expired teaching  OR valid/expired paraprofessional certificate exempts an applicant from taking the online Substitute Training Course. If exempt, upload a copy of your certificate of application.
