The Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency will focus on innovative teaching and learning in elementary, middle and high schools. Our program involves a five-year commitment that includes:

  • Year 1: an initial residency teacher preparation period while participating in a master’s degree program with Relay Atlanta Graduate School of Education (GSE)
  • Year 2: employment as a lead teacher in Atlanta Public Schools while completing the requirements for a master’s degree from the Relay Atlanta Graduate School of Education (GSE)
  • Year 3-5: employment as a lead teacher in Atlanta Public Schools
During the first year as Teacher-of-Record, residents will continue the Relay Atlanta GSE coursework to earn a Master of Arts in Teaching. Residents will also receive intense support through the APS Instructional Mentoring Program. Each school has campus-based mentors on hand that utilize the New Teacher Center Model to provide coaching and individualized professional learning to novice teachers. The teachers will also participate in ongoing professional learning activities as a cohort of novice teachers.

The resident works alongside an experienced mentor teacher for one full year, and as a result, residents later enter their own classrooms as Teacher-of-Record with the experience and competencies that come from intense, sustained classroom apprenticeship experience.

In addition to the yearlong co-teaching component, the Relay Atlanta GSE will offer a curriculum that is geared specifically toward preparing residents to teach successfully in urban classrooms. The curriculum is driven by the Georgia required competencies, skills and dispositions and the Relay Atlanta GSE Master’s degree level curriculum. Residents will complete their coursework together in a cohort to earn a Georgia Induction Certificate at the end of the residency year.

Our program is designed to recruit teachers for high needs positions and give them a strong preparation experience through a residency model, with on “on the job” training and support, followed by intense post-residency induction support.
